In conjunction with my work with Al Basheer Institute and its Better Understanding for a Better World Program, I'm off to Kampala, Uganda for a week of conferences to address the nation's religious leaders and five hundred eighteen to thirty-five year-old university students and young professionals on the value of inter-cultural encounters and the spiritual components of how to discover your "brother in the other". The program addresses strategies to prevent radicalization, support mutually respectful communities, and transform personal awareness. For many, the idea that you can be faithful to your own tradition without demonizing or devaluing other traditions is a revelation. We hope to demonstrate that you cannot really be true to your own tradition and hate or devalue others at the same time. No doubt it will give me lots more material to write about!
